Lessons move outdoors in the new Reading Yurt at Scarborough's Wheatcroft School
Tue 16 May 2023Pupils at Wheatcroft School are benefitting from a fantastic new outdoor learning space – the Reading Yurt. The yurt was the brainchild of school librarian Mrs Hyde.
School Business Manager, Miss Lewis said: “Mrs Hyde came up with the excellent idea to enhance our school area with a reading tent (or yurt!).
"She will be holding reading club in there and our teachers will be having small group reading sessions.
"The children have beanbags and comfy cushions and rugs inside and it is already proving very popular!”

Hedgehog Awareness at Wheaties
Wed 10 May 2023This week at Wheaties we have been learning all about Hedgehogs! In celebration of Hedgehog Awareness Week we have been learning lots of things about these spiky little creatures such as habitats, different species, what they eat and how to keep them safe.
We have even built the very first Wheatcroft Hedgehog Hotel. The Wheaties team had fun making it and we'll be setting up a night vision camera every night to try and see if we have any guests checking in! -
Year 5 and 6 Football
Wed 26 Apr 2023A big well done to all the Year 5 and 6 footballers yesterday who took part in friendly matches against St Martins and Gladstone Road. Some good football was demonstrated and resilience was shown to keep battling to the end of their games (even if the score line wasn’t going in their favour). The members of staff from the other schools commented on how impressed they were with Wheatcroft children.

Year 4 East Barnby Residential
Thu 23 Mar 2023After arriving and making up our beds we had a great afternoon beck scrambling. Everyone challenged themselves and we all got wet in the water!
After a good nights sleep we had a fabulous day canoeing down the River Esk. Everyone showed excellent teamwork and lots of courage and resilience to get us all the way! We even saw a steam train go past as we were having our lunch on the island in the river. In the evening we rested by our camp fire.
On day 3 we worked together and built shelters before packing our things and returning home .
We are so proud of everything that the children have achieved this week and we had many lovely comments from the East Barnby staff about their exemplary behaviour, listening skills and resilience. They were a credit to Wheatcroft.

Readathon News!!
Fri 17 Mar 2023I am THRILLED to announce that our Wheatcroft Children have raised an utterly incredible £1,060 through their ‘Read for Good’ sponsored read!!! ⭐️💪👏🥳🎉
Through their endeavour, motivation to help others and your support and generosity they have made a real difference to the lives of seriously ill children in hospital. The books and story teller visits paid for with the money raised will comfort, entertain, distract and reassure countless children. ❤️
Many of the children who took part have discovered a new author they love, tried a new genre of books and have pushed themselves to read as much as they can. Also 20% of what they have raised will be given back to our school in the form of brand new books! I have more certificates ready for anyone for who has not yet handed in their sponsor cards - it’s not too late to take part! ⭐️
Thank you.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Year 6 London Residential
Mon 27 Feb 2023Year 6 made Wheatcroft history this week on our first ever residential visit to London! We had two exciting days in the capital enjoying visits to the British Museum, Covent Garden, The Lion King Musical, Cleopatra's Needle, The Houses of Parliament for a workshop and tour, a Thames River Cruise, and a flight on the London Eye! We also did lots of walking and were pro tube-travellers by the end! All the staff who supported on the visit are incredibly proud of the children's behaviour, their courage, their care for one another and the way they represented our school. I would like to thank all the children and also all the staff who came with us, for making this visit such a success. 💛⭐️

World Book Day 2023
Fri 24 Feb 2023WORLD BOOK DAY 2023 - Thursday 2nd March *
This year for World Book Day we are taking part in a sponsored 'Readathon' on behalf of the 'Read for Good' charity. ( readforgood.org )The children will bring home a sponsorship card and a bookmark. The money raised will be spent by the charity to provide books for children in hospital. Also, Wheatcroft will receive free books to the value of 20% of the total amount raised. Our Readathon will begin on Monday 27th February and finish on Friday 10th February. Any donation - no matter how big or small - will make a huge difference. Thank you in advance for your support.
On World Book day (Thursday 2nd March) we will be conducting a book swap within our classes. If your child would like to send a book in to swap, please do so. Please make sure any books sent in for swaps are of good quality and are not longer wanted. We are not dressing up for World Book Day so please send the children to school in their uniform. We will also be having a live author event in school with best-selling author Michael Morpurgo, which is really exciting!
