Attendance at Wheatcroft CP School
At Wheatcroft CP School, our motto “Learn and Care” includes caring about the future of every child. We recognise the importance of full attendance and punctuality in ensuring that every pupil has the very best chance to succeed.
Regular attendance is not just a legal requirement – it is the foundation for progress, wellbeing and future opportunity. We are committed to working in partnership with families to support excellent attendance and punctuality, and to ensure no child is disadvantaged by missed learning.
National Expectations (DfE, September 2024)
The Department for Education has set out clear expectations for schools, parents and local authorities:
-
Attendance of 95% or above is the national expectation for every pupil.
-
Schools must have clear policies and consistent systems for monitoring and improving attendance.
-
Schools are required to work proactively with families and, where necessary, the local authority to address persistent absence (below 90%).
-
All schools must now publish their Attendance Policy, setting out expectations, processes, and support for families.
-
Term-time holidays will not be authorised unless in exceptional circumstances.
Why Attendance Matters
-
Pupils with attendance below 95% are at risk of underachievement.
-
Regular attenders make better progress both socially and academically.
-
Good attendance helps pupils build friendships, routines and resilience.
-
Every single day counts – even missing one day every two weeks equals a year of lost learning by the time a child leaves secondary school.
Punctuality
Being on time is just as important as regular attendance. Arriving late:
-
Means children may miss vital introductions to learning.
-
Interrupts the class and can affect confidence.
-
Creates habits that impact future learning and employment.
Arriving on time allows pupils to settle calmly, connect with friends, and be fully ready for the day ahead.
Our School Approach
At Wheatcroft, we:
-
Monitor attendance daily and follow up swiftly on any absence.
-
Provide early support for families where attendance is a concern.
-
Celebrate good and improving attendance through certificates, praise and rewards.
-
Work with families and external agencies where persistent absence occurs, in line with national policy.
We expect parents to:
-
Value education by ensuring their child attends school regularly and punctually.
-
Inform school promptly if their child is unwell.
-
Avoid term-time holidays.
-
Support our attendance procedures in partnership with staff.
Every day in school matters. Every lesson builds towards your child’s success.
“Attend today, achieve tomorrow.”
