House Captains
House Captains at Wheatcroft CP School
At Wheatcroft CP School, our motto “Learn and Care” shapes all that we do. Our House system is a special part of school life, giving every child a sense of belonging, teamwork and pride. From their very first day, pupils are allocated to one of our four Houses – Holbeck, Cornelian, Seaview or Deepdale – and remain part of that House throughout their time at Wheatcroft.
Our Houses and Local Identity
Our Houses are named after places in our local Scarborough community:
-
Holbeck – once home to Scarborough’s Holbeck Hall, a grand Victorian hotel that dramatically collapsed into the sea in 1993. Today, Holbeck represents resilience, change and learning from the past.
-
Cornelian – named after Cornelian Bay, a beautiful, quiet stretch of Scarborough’s coastline. Its name comes from the semi-precious red stone “carnelian” found on the beach. It symbolises natural beauty, calm and strength.
-
Seaview – inspired by the panoramic sea views Scarborough is famous for, reminding us of ambition, possibility and looking to the future.
-
Deepdale – reflecting one of Scarborough’s scenic valleys, it reminds us of our close connection with the natural environment, community and heritage of our locality.
These names root our Houses in the rich geography and history of Scarborough, giving our pupils pride in the place they live and learn.
House Captains and Leadership
Children in Class 6 have the opportunity to be chosen as House Captains during their final year at Wheatcroft. Each House elects two Captains to represent them for the school year. This is an important and responsible role:
-
Leading House events such as Sports Day and charity fundraising days.
-
Welcoming parents and visitors to school events.
-
Keeping the weekly House Points tally and reporting results in assembly and on the website.
All pupils contribute to their House through teamwork in multi-year groups for Sports Day, charity events, and the pursuit of the coveted House Points Cup, awarded termly and annually.
Why Pupil Leadership Matters
Research shows that giving pupils genuine leadership opportunities improves confidence, communication skills, sense of responsibility and attitudes to learning (DfE, 2016; NFER, 2018).
At Wheatcroft, the House Captain role supports these outcomes by ensuring our oldest pupils model our ethos of learning and care, and by giving them meaningful opportunities to serve and inspire the whole school community.
