Class 1
Meet the Team!
Miss Harper
In Year 1, Miss Harper is the class teacher and the class is supported by Miss Warrington each morning and Miss Witty each afternoon. Mrs Hillion teaches the class each Monday afternoon. Miss Chapman supports individual children.
We have a similar approach to EYFS with continuous provision for the children to access learning through play, and we are able to access the outside area each afternoon. The topics vary throughout the year and this half-term we will be learning about the Jurassic Coast. The children will learn objectives based on the National Curriculum, and we will be learning Geography, History, Science, RE, PE, Computing, Art, PSHE, Design and Technology, as well as English and Mathematics.
Each day starts with a familiar structure, as the children have a story in the library or with a guided read to an adult. Throughout the morning, we cover English, phonics and Maths. Each afternoon, we have a different focus based on the National Curriculum.
Tips for parents to help their child:
Encourage your child to use the toilet and dress themselves independently.
To recap phonics and hear your child read on a regular basis. They can read their book a couple of times to develop confidence and fluency.
If you have questions or worries, speak to Miss Harper or ring the office to arrange a call back.
Thank you for your support, and we are looking forward to celebrating your child's successes with you!

The Phonics Screening Check - Information for Parents
-
What is the phonics screening check? All children in Year 1 take the phonics screening check in June. It is designed to give teachers and parents information on how your child is progressing in phonics. It will help to identify whether your child needs additional support at this stage so that they do not fall behind in this vital early reading skill.
